Principal's Message - March 2019

By Andrew Macphail

I would like to begin by wishing you all a very enjoyable spring break. I know some of you will be travelling while others will be continuing on working at home. Please stay safe and we look forward to your son and daughter’s return Apr. 1.

I would also like to thank so many of you for your support at this past Wed. Parent Consultation meeting the school district held regarding the seismic upgrade coming to ATSS. It was standing room only with all available space filled. This was a huge show of support that you and our students demonstrated for our Traditional Program. We thank-you for that. It certainly had to have had a strong positive impact on our school board. It was encouraging to see so many of you out to support this program.

Our basketball seasons have come to an end and we have had some remarkable successes. Our Gr. 9 girls came in second in the province with silver in the Provincial Playoffs held two weeks ago at Heritage Woods Secondary in Port Moody. We were undefeated until the final game where we lost to a very strong McMath Secondary, a school of 1300 from Richmond, BC. An outstanding job by our girls and their two coaches, Mr. Virk and Mr. Dhillon. At the Gr. 9 and Jr. levels all high schools in BC compete at the same level. It is incredible that our school for 440 competes against other BC secondary schools of 1500 and we came in second in the province. Our Sr. boys also had a very successful season winning several tournaments and finishing 4th in the Fraser Valleys. Missing a provincial playoff spot by one game. Great work by coaches Don and Ryan Havilland and Scott Cole.

The season has now started for both girls’ soccer and boys’ rugby. Mr. Wellington and Mr. Domke have started practices. Thanks to our coaches for providing these opportunities for our students.

We will be sending an update of your son or daughter’s academic progress via checkmyprogress update sent by e-mail to the e-mail address you have left with the school. This will arrive on Mon. Mar. 18. This will contain the subjects that your son or daughter are talking and their current up to date marks with a list of assignments and homework. Please contact the school if either you haven’t received the report by Mon. or if you have any questions. We have heard rumors that some of our students may intercept e-mails of school marks prior to your receiving them. Our secretaries will be happy to help with what they can but just a reminder that the teachers won’t be back until Apr. 1.

Enjoy your break and we look forward to all of our students returning safely after the break. That last part of school goes very quickly so it is important that students don’t fall behind at this point.

Sincerely, Glen Hildebrand, Principal, ATSS
