Update on ATSS Seismic Project

The Abbotsford Board of Education is hoping to keep students at Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School during the seismic mitigation project, pending final approval from the Ministry of Education.

District staff presented a number of available options for the seismic mitigation project during both the May 7th and May 28th public Board Meetings. The option that the Board of Education is most in favour of looks at amalgamating the secondary and middle school campuses, including administration and counselling, which would free up additional spaces for classrooms. Three portables may still be required for temporary accommodations.

“There are a number of unknowns at this time, as we have to follow proper protocol and wait for Ministry approval,” noted Stan Petersen, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education. “But we want to assure parents that we are reviewing every possible option for this project and will continue to communicate with our traditional school families once we have more information and answers.”

District staff will submit updated project plans to the Ministry of Education by the end of the month.
